The Powerful Cover Letter

Remember: Before they start calling job seekers for interviews, recruiters need ways to sift through the many responses received from job postings. Often, a cover letter is one set of criteria used to judge whether you are a fit for the company.

An effective cover letter should have no more than three paragraphs:

  1. Paragraph 1 - Tells why you are writing, the position you are applying for and how you learned of the position. Also include why you are interested in the position and organization.
  2. Paragraph 2 - Answers why the company should hire you. If you have related experience, be sure to point it out. Tell the employer specifically what you have to offer and support with examples.
  3. Paragraph 3 - Use this paragraph to propose an interview or indicate that you will be contacting/following up with the potential employer to arrange an interview.

Introducing your resume, the cover letter is your first impression, so put your best foot forward!
